RIPngOverview
Asamatureroutestandard,RoutingInformationProtocol(RIP)is
widelyappliedinInternet,especiallyinsomesmallandmedium-
sizednetworks.Consideringthissituationandthecompatibility
betweenRIPandIPvt6,InternetEngineeringT askForce(IETF)
alterstheexistingtechnologyandsetstheRIPstandardunder
IPv6,namely,RIPnextgeneration(RIPng).ItdiffersfromRIPv2
inthatitcancelsrouteauthentication.
AstheUDP-basedprotocol,RIPngsendsandreceivespacket
throughPort521.Generally,RIPngpacketsareclassiedintotwo
categories:requestpacketsandupdatepackets.
RIPngisnotintendedtocreateacompletelynewprotocolbutto
makenecessaryalternationtoRIP ,thusenablingittoadaptto
theroutingrequirementsunderIPv6.Therefore,RIPnghasthe
sameworkingprinciplewithRIP ,exceptforchangesinaddress
andpacketformat.
AddressLength
BothRIPv1andRIPv2arebasedonIPv4andtheiraddress
eldis32-bit,whileRIPngisbasedonIPv6andalltheapplied
addressesare128-bit.
SubnetMaskandPrexLength
RIPv1isusedinanetworkwithoutsubnets.Inthisway,RIPv1
cannotbeusedforpropagationofVariableLengthSubnetMask
(VLSM)orforCIDRclasslessaddresses.Thefunctionofsup-
portingsubnetroutingisaddedtoRIPv2,anditcanusesubnet
masktodistinguishnetworkroutesandsubnetroutes.
IPv6addressprexhasexplicitmeanings;RIPngdoesnothave
subnetmaskanymorebuthaveprexlength.Similarly,dueto
applicationofIPv6addresses,itisnotnecessarytodistinguish
networkroutes,subnetroutesandhostroutesinRIPng.
