Diffusion Pump
It is not necessary to change the diffusion pump fluid more than once a year, unless
you observe symptoms that suggest a problem with the diffusion pump fluid. The MSD
must be vented in order to check the diffusion pump fluid (except for the 5975/5973).
Therefore, the best time to check the fluid is when the instrument is already vented
for other maintenance.
How to Check the Fluid Level
5972/5971 Series
If it is not vented already, shut down and vent the MSD according to instrument manual.
Unplug the MSD power cord.
Remove the pump and cover the top with aluminum foil.
After heating the pump in a GC oven at 60°C for 15 minutes to make the fluid flow
down into the reservoir at the bottom, remove the stack parts.
Inspect the pump fluid. If the fluid is discolored or contains particulate material,
the fluid must be changed.
Use a metal ruler to determine the depth of the fluid. A pump that has been in
operation should have a pool 9 mm +/- 1 mm deep. Fluid in freshly charged pumps
will be 12 mm deep. It is normal that up to 2 mL of oil may be in the rear portion
of the vacuum manifold. The recommended total fluid charge for the 5971/5972
is 18 mL (+/- 2 mL).
5975/5973 Series
Use the sight glass to determine the depth of the fluid. The recommended total fluid
charge is approximately 37 mL.
