About 10BaseT
About 10BaseT
Twisted-pair Ethernet, as defined by the IEEE 802.3 specifications, is called
10BaseT. This is the latest development in the Ethernet evolution and repre-
sents a tremendous leap in networking technology. Because 10BaseT uses
regular twisted-pair (UTP) telephone wire, it decreases the cost of network-
ing. It’s also simple to install because it uses the same RJ45 jacks as your tele-
phone system.
Unlike thick and thin networks, which are arranged in a linear or “bus”
topology, 10BaseT networks are arranged in a “star” configuration, in which
network nodes are connected like spokes in a wheel. A star configuration is
more reliable because each “spoke” is isolated and can’t affect the other
nodes if it runs into trouble.
