Tie-downs
The luggage compartment is equippe d with four tie-
downs to secu re luggage and ot her items.
Use the t ie-downs to sec ure your ca rgo prope rly=> page 171,
"Load ing the luggage compartment" .
In a collision, t he laws of physics mean th at eve n small er ite ms t ha t
are loose in the vehicle will become heavy missiles that can cause
ser iou s injury. Ite ms in t he vehi cle posses s e ne rgy which vary wit h
vehicle speed and the we ight of the item . Vehicle speed is t he most
sign ificant fa ctor.
For examp le, in a frontal collis ion at a speed of 30 mph (48 km/h) ,
the forces acting on a 10- lb (4.5 kg) object are a bout 2 0 times the
normal weig ht of t he ite m. This mea ns t hat t he weight of t he ite m
wou ld s uddenly be about 200 lbs . (90 kg) . You can imagine the inju-
ries t hat a 200 lbs . (90 kg) item flying freely t hroug h t he pa ssenge r
compartment could cause in a collision like this.
& WARNING

downs can fail during hard braking or in a collision and cause
