• Never install suspension component s that do not have the
same performance characteristics as the components originally

Items stored between the safety belt buckle and the center
console can cause the sensors in the buckle to send the wrong
information to the electronic control module and prevent the
Advanced Airbag System from working properly.
• Always make sure that nothing can interfere with the safety
belt buckles and that they are not obstructed .

The side airbags are located in t he sides of t he front seat backrests

fig. 177 and the rea r backrest facing the doors . They are ide ntified
by the wo rd "AIRBAG".
The side airbag system basically consists of :
• t he ele ctron ic cont rol mod ule a nd extern al side imp act se nsors
• the two airbags located in the sides of the front backrests and the
t wo air bags * locat ed in the rea r ba ckres t
• the a irbag warning light in the instrument cluster.
The airbag syst em is monitored elect ronically t o ma ke ce rt ain that it
is funct io ning properly at all times . Each t ime you turn o n the igni-
t ion, t he airbag system indica t or light will come on for a few seconds
(self d iagnostics).
The side airbag system supp lements the safety belts and can he lp to
reduc e t he risk of injury to t he dr iver's and fro nt passenge r's upper
torso on the s ide of the vehicle that is struck in a side collision. The
air bag dep loys only in side imp acts an d only when t he veh icle acceler-
