What you should know
The highest priority is given to maintaining starting capa -
bility.
The battery is severe ly ta xed in sho rt -dist an ce dr iving, in city t raffi c
and dur ing the cold time of year. Abundant e lectrical energy is
req uired, bu t on ly a little is gene rat ed. It is also crit ical if t he engine
is not running and electr ical components are tur ned on. In this
instance energy is being cons umed but none is being gene rated.
It is in p recise ly t hese situations that you will no t ice energy ma nage-
ment actively regulating t he distribution of energy.
Vehicle stands for an extended period
If you do not dr ive your vehicle over a period of several days o r weeks,
elect rical components are gradually cut back or sw itched off. This
red uces energy cons umption and maintains starting capability over a
longer period.
Take into consideration that whe n you unlock your vehicle, some
convenience func t ions, such as the remo t e key or powe r seat adjus t-
me nt, may not be avai lab le. The convenie nce functions will be ava il-
able again when you tu rn on the ignition and sta rt the eng ine .
W ith the engine turned off
If you listen to t he radio, for example, with the engi ne turned off or
use othe r MMI funct ions, t he battery is being discharged .
If starting capab ility is jeopard ized due to energy consumption, the
following wa rning appears in the MMI display:
Please start engine, otherw ise system will switch off in
3 minutes.
The war ning indicates that the system will be turned off automat i-
cally after 3 minutes. If you wish to cont inue using the functions, you
have to start the engine.
With the engine running
Altho ugh electr ical ene rgy is genera t ed whe n the vehicle is being
driven, the battery can become discharged. This happens most ly
when little energy is being generated and a great dea l consum ed and
the batte ry's state of charge is not optimal.
To br ing the e ne rgy balance back int o eq uilibr ium, cons umers whi ch
requ ire especially large amounts of energy are temporari ly cut back
or swit ched off. Hea t ing systems in pa rtic ula r require a great dea l of
ene rgy.
If you not ice, for exampl e, t hat the heated seats * or the
heated rea r window a re not heating, t hey have been temporarily cut
back or switched off. These systems will be ava ila ble aga in as soon as
the energy ba lance has been restored.
You will a lso notice t hat eng ine idle spee d ha s bee n increased
slightly. This is normal and not a cause for concern. By increas ing
eng ine idle speed the add itional ene rgy requ ired is gene rat ed and the
battery is cha rged. •
