HEAT EXCHANGER
A device that transfers heat from one system to another, such as in a
warm air furnace.
NON-CONDENSING FURNACE
A standard furnace which does not recycle the heat of the vaporized
water.
OXIDES OF NITROGEN (NO

The sum of NO (Nitric Oxide) and NO

(Nitrogen Dioxide).
PRIMARY AIR
Air mixed with the fuel inside the burners. Primary Air Temperature
can be greater or less than Ambient Air Temperature.
SECONDARY AIR
Air for combustion supplied to the outside of the flame to supplement
the primary air.

The chemical symbol for Sulfur Dioxide.
STACK LOSS
Percent of the available fuel energy that the furnace wastes through
transport in the stack gases.
STOICHIOMETRIC MIX
Perfect theoretical fuel/air mix. Not practical for combustion equip-
ment. “Real world” equipment requires an certain amount of excess
air for complete combustion.
