7. Restoring the operating
system (recovery)
For Windows10, Microsoft has begun offering the
operating system as "software as a service." This means
that the operating system will no longer be replaced
by a successor but instead continuously modified and
expanded. For some licensing models like the internet-of-
things (IoT) version of Windows10, major modifications
to the range of functions are no longer covered by the
existing license.
! Always use the latest recovery version (image) for
the installed Windows version (e.g. Windows10
Enterprise 2019 LTSB).
! Different versions of Windows are not mutually
compatible and are also subject to different
licensing specifications.
For this reason, the recovery
medium used during recovery must match the installed
Windows version.
Windows version Recovery version Order number
Windows10 LTSC 2019 V3.40
Windows10 LTSB 2016 V2.10 1687005134
Windows10 LTSB 2015 V1.40 1687005122
7.1 Identifying the installed Windows
version
1. Select "This PC >> System properties."
2. The installed version is indicated in the
"Device specifications" area under "Windows
specifications."
i If the operating system cannot be started, the
Windows version installed can be found on the
licensing label. The licensing label is attached to
the underside of the housing, below the storage
battery, on the right.
7.2 Downloading the ISO installation
file (image)
Use the following link to download the current
image of the installed Windows version:

7.3 Creating a recovery USB stick
A recovery USB stick is required to perform the
recovery. The recovery USB stick must be bootable.
This way, it is possible to launch the operating
system from the recovery USB stick even if there is
no working operating system installed. The following
is a description of how any commercially available
USB stick can be turned into a bootable recovery USB
stick.
7.3.1 Prerequisites
Due to the image's data volume (approx. 10GB), the
following minimum prerequisites apply to the creation
of a bootable recovery USB stick.
Component Details
Data storage device USB stick (min. 16GB)
Available hard drive memory
