5. ADDING SALT TO THE POOL
Beforeaddingsalttothepool(usepoolgradesaltcompliantwiththestandardEN16-401),makesure
thatthevaluesofthewaterbalanceparametersarecorrect:
pHshouldbebetween7.0and7.4
Calcium hardness (water hardness = concentration of dissolved calcareous substances)
between100and250ppm
TotalAlkalinityshouldbebetween100and250ppm
Makesurethatthecombinationwillresultinbalancedwater(TaylorbalanceorLangelierIndex,contacta
qualiedpoolprofessional).
!
Important:IfthepoolwaspreviouslytreatedusingPHMB,makesurethatalltraceofthisdisinfectant
hasbeeneliminatedbeforestartingtheChlorinegenerator.
!
Important:IfthepoolwaspreviouslytreatedwithstabilisedChlorine(trichloroisocyanuricacidorsodium
dichloroisocyanurate),makesurethattheconcentrationofdisinfectantinthewaterisnotabove30mg/L.
Iftheentirevolumeofwaterinthepoolhasnotjustbeenreplaced,measuretheinitialsaltconcentration
withsalttester.
Itmayoccasionallybenecessarytoaddsalttocompensatelossthatmaybeexperienceddueto:
back-washingofthelterlledwithsandorglass
degassingoftrichloramines(intermediateby-productsformedbyactiveChlorinereacting
withorganicmatter),thatarevolatile
lossofwaterduetosplashing,oroccasionaloverowsthroughtheoverow
Measuretheconcentrationofsaltinthewaterregularly,andmakesurethatitdoesnotdropbelow3.5g/lfor
PROAmodels,andbelow1.5g/lforPROLSmodels.
Usetheformulabelowtocalculatetheamountofsalttobeaddedtothewater.
Theparametersthatneedtobetakenintoconsiderationare:thevolumeofwaterinthepool(donotforget
thebuffertankifthepoolfeaturesanoverow),andtheinitialsaltconcentration(tobemeasured).
M
(kg)
= (Cf - Ci)×V
(m3)
M=weightofsalttobedissolvedinkg
Cf=targetsaltconcentration,ing/litre(note:1g/litre=1000ppmormg/litre)
Ci=initialsaltconcentrationmeasured,ing/litre.Ifthepooliscompletelydrainedandthenlledwithwater
fromthemunicipalsupply,itmaybeassumedthatCi=0
V=volumeofwaterinthepool(includingthebuffertankifthepoolfeaturesanoverowfeature),inm3
EXAMPLE1:
Poolcontaining100m3ofwater,withaninitialsaltconcentrationof1g/L(1000ppm),thetargetsalt
concentrationbeing4g/L:
M = (4-1) x 100 = 300
Add300kgofsalt
EXAMPLE:
Poolcontaining50m3ofwater,initiallyempty,targetsaltconcentrationbeing1.7g/L:
M=1.7x50=85kgofsalttobeadded;
!
IMPORTANT DonotturntheChlorinegeneratoronwhilethesaltisdissolving.
