Procedure 2-17
Installing a Fiber Optic Cable
Use the following procedure to install a fiber optic cable.
Note: Do not remove the dust covers from the SFP optic and optical cable
until immediately prior to mating the connectors.
Step Action
1 Clean both the port and the connector using standard local practices. If
alcohol is used as part of the cleaning process, use canned compressed air
to blow dry the surfaces you have just cleaned.
2 Insert the connector into the port on the device until you hear a clicking sound.
3 Insert the tail end of the cable into the port on the terminating device.
Note: The transceivers on the 3916 are hot swappable. A reboot is not
required after the optics are installed. The system will discover the optics
automatically.
The optical cable is now installed. The port is automatically activated
when the SFP transceiver is installed. Assuming the terminating device
is connected, the Link LED for the port should become activated. See
“LED Overview” on page 4-1 for more information.
