Remove and Replace Cisco NIM-SSD or NIM-HDD
• Only a single SSD Carrier Card NIM per router is supported on any bay.
• Plugging additional SSD Carrier Card NIMs into a bay powers off the module.
• Power down the NIM-SSD module and wait for the power LED to turn off before removing the
module or removing and replacing new SSD drives.
• Replacing any SSD drive can cause some data loss.
Warning
During this procedure, wear grounding wrist straps to avoid ESD damage to the card. Do not
directly touch the backplane with your hand or any metal tool, or you could shock yourself.

Before you begin, read the following important notices:
• The form-factor internal hard drive is accessible from the front panel of the Cisco 4451-X ISR and
supports the online insertion and removal feature (OIR) using the following commands for the
standby:

request platform hardware filesystem harddisk: offline

To verify the SSD drive installation, use the show platform command. The following example
shows sample output from a NIM SSD installed on a 4451-X ISR platform:

• Remove an internal hard drive only when it fails. You can remove the internal drive and recover the
data.
• If the drive is in active state, you can back up with the drive plugged into a USB port using the
archive tar command.
