In-House Hydraulic Fluid Testing
Eliminate air bubbles by allowing your sample to stand for 20 to 30 minutes, and then hold the bottle
up to the light to check whether the uid is clear or cloudy .
Any visible debris is an indication of a severe solid contamination problem, the source of which must
be located and corrected immediately. Common sources of this kind of contamination may be
component wear, under-sealed reservoir covers, or dirty air breather lt ers. If the sample is the least
bit “cloudy” it is an indication of water contamination, the source of which must be found and elimi-
nated immediately. Common sources of solid contamination are inadequate outdoor storage, un-
sealed reservoir covers or condensation.
Blotter Spot Test
A “BLOTTER SPOT TEST” may also be performed to test for OXIDATION. Place a DROP of
hydraulic ui d on a piece of white blotter paper. The Blotter Test will provide an indication that
a complete test may be necessary.
1) (A) If the blotter remains colorless or develops only a light yellow ring, oxidation is under
control.
2) (B) If color develops but is uniform throughout, the uid is still serviceable but should be
checked for correct additive content.
3) (C) If the sample shows distinct rings the uid should be changed.
4) (D) If a distinct dark spot remains in the middle, but a lighter colored uid migrates outward
in the blotter paper, the uid is about to dump (or already has) sludge or other by-products
into the system. The time for replacement of this uid has already passed.
