Set power control options
You can reduce the amount of power a Digi TransPort router consumes.
n In normal operation, TransPort WR21 and WR31 models consume around 300 mA from a 12 V
DC power supply, which equates to about 4 W.
n The TransPort WR41v2 consumes around 400 mA from a 12 V DC power supply which equates
to about 4.8 W.
n The TransPort WR44v2 consumes around 800 mA from a 12 V DC supply, which equates to
about 10 W.
Reducing power consumption is useful for emote sites with no mains supply available, solar or wind
battery-powered applications, when the router is communicating with a serial device only, or when
you want to wake the router at a certain time by using a Python script to turn on the cellular module
and send data. The tradeoff for reducing power consumption is reduced functionality and/or reduced
performance. For example, with the most aggressive power reductions available on the TransPort
WR21, you can reduce the power consumption to under 1 W.
Functional areas for saving power
There are several areas of TransPort router functionality where you can save power, if necessary:
n Lower the CPU speed. TransPort WR21 and WR31 models have two CPU settings available:
l 0 = high speed (454 MHz)
l 1 = low speed (360 MHz)
TransPort WR41 & WR41v2 models have three CPU settings available:
l 0 = high speed (400 MHz)
l 1 = medium speed (266 MHz)
l 2 = low speed (133 MHz)
n Turn off the LEDs on the front panel of the router.
n Disable Ethernet capability.
n Disable cellular module functionality.
n Disable GPS functionality, where fitted.
n Disable GPRS functionality, where fitted.
n Disable Wi-Fi, where fitted.
n Disable DSL functionality, where fitted.
n Disable the USB port.
Power control profiles
The router has several groups of power control settings, referred to as power control profiles,
numbered from 0 to 3. At startup, the router always uses power control profile 0 unless otherwise
configured.
You can change the power control profile from the command line only.
