Overview
XBee/XBee-PRO ZigBee RF Modules User Guide 10
This manual describes the operation of the XBee/XBee-PRO ZB RF module, which consists of ZigBee firmware
loaded onto XBee S2 and S2B hardware, models: XBEE2, XBEEPRO2 and PRO S2B. The XBee/XBee-PRO ZB RF
Modules are designed to operate within the ZigBee protocol and support the unique needs of low-cost, low-
power wireless sensor networks. The modules require minimal power and provide reliable delivery of data
between remote devices.
The modules operate within the ISM 2.4 GHz frequency band and are compatible with the following:
XBee RS-232 Adapter
XBee RS-485 Adapter
XBee Analog I/O Adapter
XBee Digital I/O Adapter
XBee Sensor
XBee USB Adapter
XStick
ConnectPort X Gateways
XBee Wall Router
The XBee/XBee-PRO ZB firmware release can be installed on XBee ZNet or ZB modules. The XBee ZB firmware is
based on the EmberZNet 3.x ZigBee PRO Feature Set mesh networking stack, while the XBee ZNet 2.5 firmware is
based on Ember's proprietary “designed for ZigBee” mesh stack (EmberZNet 2.5.x). ZB and ZNet 2.5 firmware are
similar in nature, but not over-the-air compatible. Devices running ZNet 2.5 firmware cannot communicate with
devices running the ZB firmware.
The difference between XBee and ZigBee
Although the names are similar, it is important that you distinguish between XBee and ZigBee. XBee is the name
Digi gave to the physical radio module and refers to the form factor. Some radio modules are also offered in an
XBee-PRO variant for expanded range. Digi offers several different XBee modules in this common form factor that
use separate communication protocols. For example, the XBee and XBee-PRO ZB radio modules are specifically
designed to communicate according to the ZigBee protocol.
The XBee comes in two hardware options: through-hole (TH) and surface mount (SMT), for mounting on
customer PCBs. The TH option has a 20-pin header, and the SMT option has 37 SMT pads around its exterior. The
modules’ small size enables XBees to be integrated into dense and space-constrained designs.
ZigBee is an RF protocol that belongs to the ZigBee Alliance. ZigBee targets the application domain of low power,
low duty cycle and low data rate requirement devices.
The ZigBee specification is a product of the ZigBee Alliance. The Alliance is an association of companies working
together to ensure the success of this open global standard. ZigBee is built on top of the IEEE 802.15.4 standard.
ZigBee provides routing and multi-hop functions to the packet-based radio protocol.
