■ Skin protection
Skin exposed to laser radiation may be subject to burns or cuts which can sometimes
cause permanent injury.
The following precautions only apply to protection against CO2 laser radiation, with
wavelengths between 9.3 and 11.5 µm (microns):
Do not place the hands or objects of any kind in the path of the CO2 laser beam.
The laser beam must never be operated without a target to absorb energy.
Metal objects reflect the CO2 laser beam. Darkened metal objects can also reflect
the laser beam. Matt or embossed objects diffuse the laser beam. Items which
absorb the laser beam heat up.
The laser must be halted immediately if an emergency occurs (laser-related or
otherwise). Situations requiring an emergency shut-down include:
- Shutter malfunction,
- Water leak in laser unit base,
- Fire,
- Incorrect use of laser,
- Use of laser without authorization
■ Protection against fire risks
Flammable objects can ignite when they come into contact with the laser beam.
A CO
2
laser can ignite most non-metallic materials.
Never operate the laser in the presence of flammable gases or liquids.
Never operate the laser in the presence of explosive materials.
Ensure that the laser installation includes an adequate safety interlock system.
