Receiver Unit which takes signals from a dish and converts them so
they can appear on radio and TV.
RS232 connection A RS232 connection allows you to connect equipment to the
receiver which supports the RS232 protocol.
Satellite A broadcast station, for satellite radio and TV, positioned on
theClarkeBelt.
SCART cable A SCART cable is also known as ‘Peritel’ cable and is
commonly used in Europe to connect the audio and video
equipment. A fully furnished SCART cable has 21 wires
which is at both sides finished with a 21-pin connector.
Service provider A service provider is a company or organization that collects
and offers you a number of programs and services. Some
are free of charge and others you have to pay for.
Smart Card A card that contains a ‘smart’ code and is used to de-
scramble encrypted broadcasts when placed in a decoder or
receiver with a built-in decoder.
SMATV A satellite master antenna TV system is a system which
shares the reception resources and is intended for the
distribution of TV and radio signals to the user in one ore
more buildings.
Stream The signal which is received from the transponder which
contains the together with the video signal, additional
information that the receiver needs in order to process the
received signal correctly.
Symbol rate Information in the stream which tells the receiver at which
speed (rate) the transponder sends the digital information
(symbols). The receiver must be able to handle the symbol
rate to process the signal correctly into a correct image.
Transponder Equipment inside a satellite responsible for receiving a single
uplinked channel and rebroadcasting it back to Earth.
Vertical In the satellite industry, vertical is used to indicate the
direction in which the received signal is polarized. Normally
you will find that it is abbreviated as V.
