Installation
LRP200000201 Issue A
5. Place the pumping system on the foundation and level it, using shims if necessary.
The pumping system must be lifted only by means of the base lifting eyes or pads. No other components shall
be used.
The pumping system must be lifted by using properly rated shackles and lifting cables installed on all lifting
pads on the base.
All lifting equipment must comply with local and national requirements.
The pumping system must be fully drained prior to lifting.
Recommended levelling criterion is 0.4 mm.m
-1
as measured with an engineer's spirit level across the
exposed base frame mounting pads. If used, shims must be free of corrosion and debris and positioned next
to the foundation bolt positions. Point loading must not exceed 40 MPa.
The vacuum pump is directly coupled to the drive motor. It is important to ensure that they are mounted on
a base frame that is free from distortion. This prevents distortion of pump casings and ensures shaft
alignment can be achieved. The coplanar flatness criteria for all base frame machined pads that support the
vacuum pump and drive motor is less than 0.4 mm.m
-1
.
Once correctly positioned and levelled, secure the pumping system to the foundation using suitable
mechanical or chemical anchor bolts if not supplied by Edwards. Refer to the installation drawing(s) supplied
with the pumping system for the number, location and size of pre-drilled holes.
On completion of installation check for "Soft Foot". This is when the casting and/or base frame has become
distorted during the alignment and bolting down procedure, resulting in one vacuum pump foot making poor
contact with the mounting pad. To check for "soft foot", anchor a dial test indicator (DTI) to the base frame,
adjacent to one of the vacuum pump feet and ensuring the dial stem makes contact with the foot. Zero set
the dial, and then loosen the hold-down bolt securing the foot. A deflection of more than 0.13 mm requires
that this foot be shimmed. All feet should be checked for this "soft foot", one at a time on a diagonal
rotation.
3.4 Connect pipelines
3.4.1 Introduction
The pumping system is provided with some or all of the following connections according to the configuration.
Process inlet/outlet.
Seal liquid initial fill/shaft centre-line drain.
Seal liquid make-up/overflow.
The design must prevent the emission of hazardous gases, vapours and liquids into the surrounding
atmosphere. Gases, vapours and liquids must be discharged to a safe location.
Failure to adhere to terminal connection maximum allowable forces and moments could damage
the pumping system.
Cast iron liquid ring pumps are treated with a corrosion inhibitor. Flush with a suitable fluid to
avoid contamination.
