Belt drive
The Gates Carbon Drive belt is very durable and
long-lasting. However, you must take extreme
care before and during assembly to ensure that
no damage is caused to the carbon bres that
make up the strength of the drive belt. Extreme
bending and twisting causes tears that can lead to
faults in the belt if subjected to high stress.
Follow the instructions for handling the Gates
Carbon Drive System belt and observe the provi
-
sions in the user manual.
Tensioning and aligning the drive belt
Adjusting the tension and alignment of
the belt requires a great deal of experi
-
ence. Improper handling can cause ac-
cidents and severe falls. Always let your
FLYER specialist retailer perform this
activity.
If the tension of the drive belt is too low,
this can cause it to slip on the toothed
pulley. This may result in accidents or
severe falls.
15. Brake
Brakes are vital to your safety on the bi-
cycle. Have the setting and maintenance
work performed by your FLYER special
-
ist retailer. Only original spare parts may
be used. Otherwise it is possible that the
functionality of your FLYER e-bike may
be impacted or damaged. No modica
-
tions of the brake system are permitted.
The braking effect of modern brakes is
very strong. You must get used to the
braking performance of the new brakes.
Activate the brake carefully. You should
practise emergency braking in a safe,
trafc-free area so that you can safely
handle your FLYER even during very in
-
tense braking manoeuvres.
Do not brake continuously or too hard on
long downhill section, as your brakes
might overheat leading to reduced brak
-
ing power. Alternate between applying
the front and back brake on long and
steep downhill sections to allow the oth
-
er brake to cool. It is preferable to brake
sharply for a shorter time when taking
bends or if you are riding too fast. This
allows the brakes to cool down in the
meantime. This preserves your braking
power. The only exception is if you are
cycling in slippery conditions such as on
sand or a smooth surface. You should
then exercise great care, slowing your
-
self down using the rear brake. Other-
wise there is the risk of the front wheel
slipping out to the side and causing a
fall. Take regular breaks during long
downhill sections to give the brakes suf
-
cient time to cool down. Do not touch
the brakes for at least 30 minutes after
riding as they can become very hot.
Almost all modern brakes provide con-
siderably more braking power than was
available for bicycles in the past. Care
-
fully familiarise yourself with the brakes,
practising using them and practise
emergency braking, starting on safe
ground with no trafc before setting out
into the trafc. Look ahead while riding.
