3.3 GENERALRECOIVIIVlENDATIONS
Thewarranty of the generatordoes not cover itemsthat havebeen
subjectedto operator abuse or negligence.To receivefull value
from the warranty, the operator must maintain the generator as
instructed inthis manual.
Some adjustmentswilt need to be made periodically to properly
maintainthe generator.
All adjustments in the Maintenancesectionof this manual should
be madeat leastonce eachseason. Followthe requirementsinthe
"MaintenanceSchedule".
NOTE:
Oncea yearreplacethesparkplugand replacetheairfilter.
A new spark plug and cleanair filter assure proper fuel-air
mixture and help the enginerun better and lastlonger.
3.3.1 GENERATOR/V/A/NTENANCE
Generatormaintenanceconsistsof keepingthe unitcleanand dry.
Operateand storethe unit in a cleandry environmentwhere it will
not be exposedto excessive dust, dirt, moisture or any corrosive
vapors.Coolingair slots in the generatormust not becomeclogged
with snow, leaves,or any otherforeign material.
Checkthe cleanlinessof the generatorfrequently and clean when
dust, dirt, oil, moistureor other foreign substances arevisible on
its exteriorsurface.
,ACAUTION!
,iA Never insertany object or toolthroughthe air cooling
slots,even if the engineis notrunning.
NOTE:
DONOTuse a garden hoseto cleangenerator. Water can
enterthe engine fuel systemand causeproblems. In addition,
if water entersthegeneratorthroughcoolingair slots, some
water will be retainedin voidsandcrevicesof the rotor
and stator winding insulation. Wateranddirt builduponthe
generator internal windings will eventuallydecreasethe
insulationresistanceofthesewindings.
3.3.2 TOCLEANTHEGENERATOR
Usea dampcloth to wipe exteriorsurfaces clean.
A soft, bristlebrush may beusedto loosencakedon dirt, oil,etc.
A vacuumcleanermay be usedto pick up loose dirt anddebris.
Low pressure air (not to exceed 25 psi) may be used to
blow away dirt. Inspect cooling air slots and openingson the
generator.Theseopeningsmust bekeptcleanandunobstructed.
3.3.3 ENGINEMAINTENANCE
,ACAUTION!
,l_ When workingon the generator, alwaysdisconnect
negativecablefrombattery. Also disconnect sparkplug
wire from sparkplugand keepwire away fromspark
plug.
3.3.4 CHECKINGOILLEVEL
See the "BEFORESTARTINGTHE GENERATOR"section for
information on checking the oil level. The oil level should be
checkedbeforeeachuse,or at leasteveryeight hoursof operation.
Keepthe oil levelmaintained.
3.3.5 CHANGINGTHEOILANDOILFILTER
Changethe oil and filter after the first 30 hours of operation.
Changethe oil every 100 hours or every season thereafter. If
running this unit under dirty or dusty conditions, or in extremely
hotweather,changethe oil more often.
,l_ Not oil may causeburns. Allow engineto cool before
draining oil. Avoid prolongedor repeatedskin exposure
with used oil. Thoroughlywashexposed areas withsoap.
Use the following instructionsto changethe oil:
Cleanareaaroundoil draincap.
Removeoil draincap from thedrainhoseandoilfill plugto drain
oil completely into a suitablecontainer.
Whenoil has completelydrained,installoil draincapandtighten
securely.
Place a suitable container beneath the oil filter and turn
filter counterclockwise to remove. Discard according to local
regulations.
Coat gasket of new filter with clean engine oil. Turn filter
clockwise until gasketcontacts lightly with filter adapter.Then
tightenan additional3/4 turn.
Fill oil sump with recommendedoil and replacethe oil fill plug.
(See"BeforeStartingthe Generator"for oil recommendations).
Wipe up anyspilledoil.
Disposeof used oil at a propercollectioncenter.
3.3.6 REPLACINGTHESPARKPLUG
Use Champion RC14YCspark plug or equivalent.Replace the
plug once each year. This will help the engine start easier and
run better.
1. Stopthe engineand pull the spark plug wire off of the spark
plug.
2. Togain access, removethe four (4) socket head screws and
takeoff the side panel.
3. Cleanthe area aroundthe spark plug and remove it from the
cylinder head.
4. Set the spark plug's gap to .76 mm (0.030 in.). Install the
correctly gappedsparkplug intothe cylinderhead(Figure13).
5. Pushthe bootfirmly on the sparkplug and install side panel.
