ENGINE BREAK-IN PROCEDURE
All Ilmor High-Performance Marine engines are run and tested on a
dynamometer at Ilmor High-Performance Marine prior to shipping.
Following delivery, the Ilmor High-Performance Marine engines must
follow break-in procedures for the rst 25 hours of operation to ensure
minimum oil consumption and maximum engine performance. Break-in
procedures are as follows:
Do not operate at idle for extended periods during the rst 10 hours.
During the rst 10 hours, operate in gear above 1,500 rpm as conditions
permit.
Continuously vary the engine rpm throughout the 25-hour break-in
period.
Do not exceed 4,725 rpm during the rst 10 hours of break-in period.
Aer 10 hours, short bursts of wide-open (6,300 rpm for the V10 and
6,000 rpm for the MV8-570) are permissible for short periods (5–7
minutes).
Accelerate smoothly during break-in and avoid full-throttle
acceleration.
Ensure that the engine has reached normal operating temperature prior
to running during break-in.
It is recommended to perform the break-in procedures in stages with a
full cool-down cycle between outings.
NOTE: Check engine oil level frequently during break-in. Add oil as
necessary. It is normal to see higher-than-normal engine oil consumption
during the break-in period.
Aer the rst 10 hours, when operating at short bursts of wide-open
throttle, it is important to verify that the propeller is correct. e correct
propeller will allow the engine to achieve rated rpm at wide-open throttle
(6,300 rpm for the V10 and 6,000 rpm for the MV8-570) with a normal
load of fuel, people, equipment and gear.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Never operate the boat at continuous wide-open-throttle. is places
undue strain on the engine components. Wide-open-throttle exists to allow
boaters to get out of dangerous encounters or situations, but it represents
the upper limit of the engines capacity.
See also the boat manufacturer’s Owner’s Manual for operational hints
and tips that can enhance the enjoyment of the boats and drive trains
integration.
