COOLING SYSTEM STORAGE AND
WINTERIZATION
Cooling system storage/winterization requires draining and ushing
raw water components with marine/RV antifreeze. Engines with closed
cooling systems DO NOT REQUIRE DRAINING OF COMPONENTS
THROUGH WHICH COOLANT FLOWS. e 50/50 coolant will provide
freeze protection down to −26°F (−32°C). However, all components
through which raw water ows must be drained. e following steps are
recommended for draining of raw water components:
is process should be completed while the engine is OFF and cool (in
order to avoid burns).
1. Drain exhaust manifolds of raw water by removing the blue plugs at the
rear of the header distribution rail.
2. Drain heat exchangers of raw water. Remove drain plug and allow
draining.
3. Reinstall exhaust header drain plugs, and heat exchanger end caps/
drain plugs aer all raw water has been drained.
4. Fill all components of raw water system with a nontoxic marine/RV
antifreeze with a protection level appropriate for your climate location.
Freeze protection level will depend on climate location. Marine/RV
antifreeze will provide freeze protection to water pockets that did
not drain and necessary corrosion protection. Approximately 3–4 gal
(11.4–15.1 L) will be needed.
5. Close thru-hull water pick-up seacock.
6. Fill raw water components by removing both 1 in. “jumper” hoses
from the exhaust header to the tailpipe. Fill the exhaust header with
antifreeze through the 1 in. outlet until full. is should ll the
raw water side of the engine heat exchanger, oil/transmission heat
exchanger, raw water pump and sea strainer. e sea strainer may need
to be opened to purge air.
7. Fill sea strainer with antifreeze if not full by end of procedure.
8. Reinstall hoses with necessary fasteners.
NOTE: Another eective method for cooling system storage and winterization
requires circulating coolant throughout all systems with the engine running.
We recommend contacting your authorized Ilmor service center for detailed
instructions and assistance performing this procedure.
