A.3 Load and Runtime
The user must understand two key concepts relating to equipment load and runtime. First, the
total load must never exceed the temperature derated capacity of the QP-1800 (see Figure 9).
As temperatures increase, the capacity of the inverter decreases. Secondly, if the equipment is
to be operated without the engine (and alternator) running, the capacity of the batteries will
establish a maximum runtime before they are depleted and not able to restart the vehicle. The
ideal limit for these military batteries is about 2400 W-hr. This assumes a new, freshly charged
batteries with ideal connections and at standard temperatures. A safety factor of 2 to 4 should
be allowed. Interestingly, the nature of these batteries is that their capacity increases with
temperature (see Figure 13). This planning is very mission specific and should be revisited
regularly. To understand power required for typical loads, Table 12 is provided as reference.
This table is a representation of approximate load values for various commercial appliances and
military radio power adapters. These are meant for a general comparison. Wattages may vary
according to manufacturer. For exact ratings refer to the appliance tag or Technical Manual.
