These
five
controls
allow
you
to
individually
boost
or
lower
five
portions
of
the
frequency
spectrum
by
12
dB.
For
operation
of
these
controls,
which
give
far
more
flexible
control
over
tone
than
the
conventional
bass/treble
controls,
see
page
17.
MUTING
switch
(A-X3
only)
Press
in
(-—
)
to
mute
the
sound
suddenly
(-20
dB),
and
the
MUTING
indicator
will
light.
Use
this
switch
for
an-
swering
the
telephone,
for
example.
Pressing
once
again
(
ML)
returns
the
volume
level
to
that
adjusted
with
the
VOLUME
control.
VOLUME
control
Controls
the
volume
to
speakers
or
headphones.
The
scale
is
graduated
in
terms
of
attenuation
in
dB
in
reference
to
the
“maximum”
position.
TAPE
MONITOR
switch
Press
this
switch
in
when
listening
to
tape
decks
(
-—
).
The
tape
monitor
indicator
will
light.
Then
select
a
tape
deck
with
the
TAPE
switch.
Note:
“Only
those
sounds
coming
from
a
tape
deck
will
be
heard
if
this
switch
is
pressed
in
(
-—).
Release
this
switch
by
re-depressing
(
2).
Make
sure
that
the
indicator
lamp
is
not
lit
when
you
listen
to
any
other
source.

this
switch
in

)
when
you
monitor
the
‘recorded
sound
(listening
to
the
sound
being
re-
corded)
using
a
three-head
tape
deck.

headphones,

low
volumes
the
tone
of
sound
appears
to
change.
This
is
not
due
to
any
change
in
the
sound
itself,
but
to
the
ear’s
different
sensitivity
to
sound
at
low
volumes,
Press
this
switch
in

)
to
compensate
for
this
when
listening
at
low
volumes.
LOUDNESS
control
(A-X3
only)
At
low
volumes
the
low end
of
the
sound
spectrum
ap-
pears
attenuated
due
to
the
ear’s
different
sensitivity
to
sound
at
low
volumes.
This
continuously
variable
poten-
tiometer
control
compensates
for
this.
Turn
it
clockwise
until
you
get
the
desired
tone
when
you
are
listening
at
low
volumes.
To
defeat
the
loudness
control
effect,
turn
it
fully
counterclockwise
to
OFF.
BASS
control
(A-X3
only)
Turn
clockwise
to
boost
bass
response,
counterclockwise
to
decrease
bass
response.
TREBLE
control
(A-X3
only)
Turn
clockwise
to
boost
treble
response,
counterclock-
wise

treble
response.

This
is
not
due
to
any
defect
of
the
unit,
but
due
ty
the
opera-
tion
of
a
protective
circuit
to
eliminate
unwanted
noise
at
the
instant
of
switching
betwen
MC
and
MM,
