7.1 Introduction to Modbus TCP/IP®
7.1.1 Introduction.
Modbus TCP/IP or Modbus TCP — is a Modbus variant used for communications over TCP/
IP networks, connecting over port 502.
The JVL implementation also supports Modbus UDP, the same protocol as ModbusTCP
but transferred via UDP, which is faster, but with no connection control.
It is basically a
Modbus RTU without a checksum calculation as lower layers already provide checksum
protection.
It is protocol based on the standard TCP/IP protocols so it is applicable anywhere there
is standard Ethernet available as it have no special requirements regarding the Ethernet
hardware, opposite some of the other industrial Ethernet protocols. Further information
about Modbus TCP is available from the Modbus Organization
www.modbus.org.
