Using controllers to modify the sound
ThemicroSTATIONletsyoumodifythesoundusingthejoystickandtherealtimecontrolknobs1–4aswellasthe
keyboard.
Differentsettingsareassignedtothesecontrollersasappropriateforeachprogramorcombination,allowingyouto
modifythetone,pitch,orvolumeineffectiveways.
Theforceusedtoplaythekeyboardcanaffectthesound’sattack,vol
ume,andbrightness.Inaddition,some
programs(suchaswindinstrumentprograms)willaddbreathnoisewhenyouplaystrongly.
Youcanmovethejoystickinfourdirections(up/down/left/right)tomodifythesound.
Withthemostcommonsettings,thepitchwillrisewhenyoumovethejoysticktotheright,
andfallwhenyoumoveittotheleft.Movingthejoystickup(awayfromyourself)will
applyvibrato,andmovingitdownward(towardyourself)willapplyfilterLFO(wah).
Awidevarietyofothereffectscanbeappliedaswellasthesettingsdescribedabove.
Therealtimecontrolsletyouusefo
urknobstocontrolthesoundorarpeggiator.These
knobsoperateinoneofthreemodes:AmodeandBmodecontrolthesound,andCmode
controlsthearpeggiator.There’salsoanExternalmodethatletsyouusetheknobsto
controlanexternalMIDIdeviceorsoftwaresynthesizer.
Intheexplanationthatfo
llows,we’llusetheseknobsinrealtimecontrolA,B,andCmodestocontrolthesoundand
thearpeggiator.
1. PresstheREALTIMECONTROLSSELECTbutton.
TheA,B,orCLEDslocatedabovetheSELECTbuttonwilllight‐up.Therearethreerealtimecontrolmodes,A,
B,andC,andyou’llcyclethroughthesemodeseachtimeyoupressthebutton.
2. WhenA(Amode)islit‐up,knobs1–4willrespectivelyadjustthebrightness(cutoff),resonance,EGdepth,
andEGreleasetime.
3. PresstheREALTIMECONTROLSSELECTbuttontomakeB(Bmode)light‐up.
Turningtheknobswillapplytheeffectthat’sspecifiedforeachprogramorcombination.Normally,Bmode
assignsknobs3and4tocontrolthechorusandreverbdepth.
4. OnceagainpresstheREALTIMECONTROLSSELECTbuttontomakeC(Cmode)light‐up.
Turningtheknobswillvarythearpeggiopatternandthepatternplaybacktempo(p. 15“Usingthe
arpeggiator”).
Youcanalsouseafootcontroller,damperpedal,orpedalswitch(soldseparately)tocontrolthesound;forexample,
