SAFETY
PFD Type IV, Throwable (Figure 2-4) can be thrown to a
person in the water, grasped and held by the user until
rescued. The most common Type IV PFDs are a buoyant
cushion or ring buoy. The throwable Type IV PFD should
be immediately available for use and always in serviceable
condition. This PFD is required in addition to the PFDs
previously discussed.
PFD Type V, Wearable (Figure 2-5) must be worn. When
inflated, it provides buoyancy equivalent to Type I, II or III
PFDs. When it is deflated, it has little buoyancy. This PFD
must be used according to the approval condition on the
label and must be worn while underway.
