5-8 Switches and controls
NOTE:
For safety, the engine in a manual transmission
vehicle cannot be started unless the gearshift lever
is in the neutral position.
In an automatic transmission vehicle, the engine
cannot be started unless the range selector lever is
in “P” or “N” position. It is safer to start the engine
with the range selector lever in the “P” position.
Start the engine with the range selector lever in the
“N” position only when absolutely necessary, for
example, if the engine stops while the vehicle is on
a level crossing.
2 Starting procedure
1. Turn the starter switch to the “ON” position.
2. Check whether the indicator lamp illumi-
nates or not.
If the indicator lamp does not illuminate,
hold down the clutch pedal and turn the
starter switch to the “START” position to start the
engine. Do not depress the accelerator pedal.
If the indicator lamp illuminates, wait until it
goes off. After the lamp has gone off, hold down
the clutch pedal and turn the starter switch to
the “START” position to start the engine.
