Multiform M20/M40 Outstation Handbook 11/11/2019
- 22 -
Overview of modes of operation
The M20 can operate in two communication modes: - SMS & Master-Station
SMS mode (GSM Only)
In this mode communication of alarms and status with personnel is via SMS messaging only. This mode
is enabled by ‘checking’ the ‘SMS’ checkbox next to the dial-out phone no’s on the ‘System’ page of the
configuration package.
The M20/M40 monitors all the programmed I/O and sends an SMS only when an alarm input or level is
reached. A formatted SMS message will then be sent to the first number in the Dial-Out list and will wait
for 5 minutes for an acknowledgement from the recipient.
Acknowledgement is achieved by returning ACK” as an SMS to the outstation. If this acknowledgement
is received the unit takes no further action until either the input returns to a normal state or a further alarm
is detected.
If no acknowledgement is received within the 5-minute period, the M20/M40 will re-send the SMS to the
next (non duty-roster) dial-out number in the list. This is continued until a successful acknowledgement is
received or no further dial-out numbers are available. The alarm is then suspended until further alarms are
detected.
Selecting a Duty-Roster.
If two or more SMS dial-out numbers are selected a ‘duty-roster’ may be set-up. This duty-roster consists
of the first ‘n’ number of SMS dial-out numbers in the dial-out list. The number (n) of which is selected
by the ‘SMS duty roster no’s’ control in the configuration package. Dial-out numbers selected as part of
a duty-roster will be highlighted in blue.
Essentially the duty roster will ‘rotate’ through duty-roster numbers on a weekly basis changing the
current duty-roster at the preset ‘roster changeover time’ (day and time). On duty changeover an SMS
message is sent to inform the duty officer that he is now selected.
A mix of duty-roster numbers and fixed dial-out numbers may be selected. The alarm dial-out routine will
dial the current duty-roster number then proceed (in the absence of an acknowledgement) to the fixed
dial-out numbers.
Status reporting.
To obtain an I/O status report via SMS messaging, send the unit the following SMS messages: -
View Ana “x” (x indicates analogue channel) M20 will return a formatted analogue value message
View Dig 1 M20 will return a digital status message
Master-Station mode
Communication of alarms is via an Opus compatible master-station where digital, analogue, total and
archive data can be extracted.
Upon alarm detection the M20/M40 initiates a dial-out to the first number in its dial-out list. It then waits
for an acknowledgement from the master-station. If this acknowledgement is not received it waits 5
