SIGNAL
AND
DATA
VALIDITY
If
noise
is
seen
on
the
waveform
because
of
poor
probe
placement,
the
detector
may
not
be
flush
with
the
test
site.
Check
that
the
probe
is
secured
and
the
tissue
sample
is
not
too
thick.
Pulse
rate
is
determined
from
the
plethysmographic
waveform
which
can
be
disrupted
by
a
cough
or
other
hemodynamic
pressure
disturbances.
Motion
at
the
test
site
is
indicated
by
noise
spikes
in
the
normal
waveform.
It
has
been
noted
that
letting
the
patient
view
the
plethysmographic
waveform
enables
them
to
assist
in
reducing
motion
artifact
(e.g.
stress
testing).
If
three
good
passes
of
the
plethys-ographic
wave
form
do
not
occur,
check
the
patient
and
the
oximeter
set
up.
