Rev. 3.1
25. If using a 3-mm combustor, use the GC’s front panel to set H
2
(PFPDH
2
) to 13
mL/min for sulfur mode or 10.5 mL/min for phosphorus mode; Air 1 (PFPD
AIR) to 9.5 mL/min; and Air 2 (MAKEUP) to 10 mL/min. After each setting,
use the flowmeter to confirm the flow rates. Once these flow rates have
equilibrated, do not make any further adjustments to the flow settings until
you are ready to optimize the operating parameters of the PFPD (see Chapter
5, “Operation”).
Note: Air 1 will be displayed as PFPD AIR, and Air 2 will be displayed as
MAKEUP.
26. Detach the flowmeter, remove the barbed fitting, and replace the flame
arrestor into the detector cap.Pneumatics in Agilent 6890 GC - Pressure
Control Manifold
Pneumatics in Agilent 6890 GC - Auxiliary EPC Manifold
The auxiliary EPC manifold controls the gas flow to the PFPD. It is mounted in the
back of the Agilent 6890 GC in the pneumatics carrier port marked “AUX.” The
following procedure is used to attach the PFPD’s pneumatics to the Auxiliary
Pressure Control Manifold. This is an alternative to using the OIM gas flow
module. This configuration is often used when installing the PFPD into the valve
box area of the Agilent 6890 GC.
1. The auxiliary EPC manifold requires a well-regulated pressure supply of H
2
and air. Pressure in the 50–70 (maximum 90) psig range is acceptable.
2. Shut off all gas supply lines to be used for the PFPD’s pneumatic system.
3. All gas line tubing must be chromatography quality or detector noise or
instability will occur during operation.
4. Remove the Agilent gas outlet block attached to the front upper right corner
of the auxiliary EPC manifold (see Figure 4.10) by unscrewing the Torx T-20
screw (Part #185561). Carefully remove the three 30-mL/min cylindrical
restrictors (marked with a red dot) and O-rings from the back of the Agilent
gas outlet block.
5. Place two of the Agilent 30-mL/min restrictors and O-rings in the number 4
and 5 gas outlets on the OI gas outlet block (Part #251900). The gas outlet
numbers are inscribed on the front of the gas outlet block (see Figure 4.10).
Place the third O-ring over the supplied 10-mL/min restrictor (Part #290601)
and insert the restrictor into the number 3 gas outlet of the OI gas outlet
block. With all three restrictors and O-rings in place, attach the OI gas outlet
block with the previously removed T-20 Torx screw.
6. Attach the H
2
label immediately to the left of the AUX 3 gas connector, the
AIR 1 label to the left of the AUX 4 connector, and the AIR 2 label to the left
of the AUX 5 connector on the front of the Auxiliary Pressure Control
Manifold (see Figure 4.10).
!
CAUTION: The
maximum
pressure into the
Detector Control-
ler must not
exceed 90 psig.
