Chapter 7 Cleaning, Disinfection and Sterilization Procedures for Endoscopic Instruments

Sterile water rinse
1. Fill a basin with sterile water. Use a basin which is at least 25 (W) × 10 (H) ×
50 (D) cm in size and deep enough to allow the endoscope to be completely
immersed.
2. Immerse the endoscope in sterile water. Using a sterile, lint-free cloth,
thoroughly rinse and wipe all external surfaces.
3. Remove the endoscope from sterile water.
4. Use a sterile, lint-free cloth, gently wipe off and dry the external surfaces of
the endoscope.
5. Store the components following the instructions given in Chapter 9,
“Storage, Transporting Outside the Hospital and Disposal”.
Non-sterile water rinse
Alcohol is flammable. Handle with care.
1. Immerse the endoscope in de-ionized water (Aq. Dest.). Using a clean,
lint-free cloth, thoroughly rinse and wipe all outer surfaces.
2. Remove the endoscope from water.
3. Use a sterile, lint-free cloth moistened with alcohol to wipe and dry external
surfaces of the endoscope.
4. Store the components following the instructions given in Chapter 9,
“Storage, Transporting Outside the Hospital and Disposal”.
7.9 Automatic cleaning/disinfection
Before automatic cleaning, the endoscope should be
reprocessed as described in Section 7.3, “Precleaning” on
page 52 to Section 7.6, “Manual cleaning” on page 60.
Regarding the condition of automatic cleaning/disinfection,
refer to Section 6.6, “Automatic cleaning/disinfection” on
page 41.
The flexible endoscope is compatible with some washer/disinfectors such as the
ETD system distributed by Olympus. Refer to the respective instruction manual
for details on operation. For any other details please contact your local Olympus
organization.
