2. Measure the resistance of the Gray & the Brown
wires on the gearcase side of the connector.
Front Gearcase Coil Resistance:
GY - BN: 25 Ohms ± 10%
3. If resistance is incorrect, closely inspect the wire
harness that leads to the front gearcase for damage.
If wires are in good condition and resistance is not
within specified range, remove gearcase (Gearcase
Removal, page 5.18), disassemble the gearcase
(Gearcase Disassembly / Inspection, page 5.19) and
replace the coil. If resistance is correct, check the
voltage supply (proceed to Step 4).
4. Set the parking brake.
5. Turn the key ON and then turn the Direction Selector
Switch to FORWARD.
6. Turn the AWD switch to AWD.
7. On the harness side of the connector, attach the red
(+) lead of a DC volt meter to the Gray wire and the
black meter lead to the Brown / White wire. There
should be (approximately) 14.0 volts DC present. (A
minimum of 11.0-12.0 Volts is required for AWD
operation).
8. If voltage is present, remove gearcase (Gearcase
Removal, page 5.18), disassemble the gearcase
(Gearcase Disassembly / Inspection, page 5.19) and
inspect components as described in Steps 9 - 12.
9. Inspect the coil side of the armature plate for a
consistent wear pattern. There should be two distinct
wear bands (one band inside the other). If only one
wear band is present or if there is wear between the
two bands, inspect the coil area as indicated in Step
10. A band with an interrupted wear mark may
indicate a warped plate, which may cause
intermittent operation. See the following illustrations:
10. Check to make sure the coil is seated in the U-
shaped insert that is pressed into the gearcase
cover. The top of the coil should be seated below the
U-shaped insert. The U-shaped insert controls the
pole gap. If the top of the coil is above the surface of
the U-shaped insert it raises the armature plate,
thereby increasing pole gap. If the pole gap
increases the coil will not be strong enough to
engage the AWD system. If this is the case order a
new Plate Cover Assembly.
