SettingAccurateLimiterThresholds
ThelimitersbuiltintotheDSO480 isintendedtobeusedforloudspeakerdriverprotection,asopposedto
amplifierprotection.Allmodernprofessionalpoweramplifiersdesignedforlivesoundusehavetheirown
limiters,whicharetailoredtoprotectingtheamplifierfromclipping.
Thefollowingsectiondescribeshowtosetuptheuni
ts’limiterstoprovideexceptionalprotectionagainst
driveroverheating,andconeoverexcursion.
MostspeakersystemsaregivenapowerratinginWattsRMS.Thisisthemaximumcontinuo uspowerthatthe
systemwillhandleandoftenappearsveryconservative.Inreality,asmusicprogramisfarfromcontinuousin
nature,thepeakpowerofthesystemismuchhi
gheruptotentimesthecontinuousfigure.Anylimiter,
whichistoprotectthedriverfromdamage,mustbeabletofulfilthefollowing tasks.
HaveanattacktimewhichiscalculatedtoallowtransientsthroughbutkeeptheRMSlevelbel
owthe
speakermanufacturersspecification;
Haveareleasetimewhichissufficientlylongtoavoidthelimiteritselfmodulatingtheprogram;
Beintelligentenoughtoadjusttheenvelopeofthelimiteraccordingtothefre quencycontentofthe
programmaterial.
Theprogramlimitersarecapableofperform
ingallthesetasks.Theonlyparameterthattheusermustset
manuallyisthethreshold,anditiscrucialthatthisisdonecorrectly.Considerthetablebelow.
