Chapter 1: Basic operation 13
With gybe inhibit on:
• you will be able to perform an AutoT ack into the wind.
• the autop ilot will prevent the boat from performing an AutoT ack away from
the wind, to prevent accidental gybes.
With gybe inhibit off:
• you can perform an AutoT ack into or away from th e wind.
Note:
Gybe inhibit is switched on as a default but can be disabled in User Calibration (see
page 30).
Gusty conditions
CAUTION: Risk of gybe
Always be aware of the relative wind angle, especially when using
the Autopilot to sail down wind.
In gusty conditions, the course may tend to wander slightly , particularly if the sails
are badl y balanced. If yo u take the following precaution s, the SmartP ilot will be
able to maintain competent control even in gale force conditions:
• Y ou can improve course k eeping by improving the sail balance:
• do no t allow the boat to h eel over excessively .
• ease the mainsheet traveller to leewa rd to reduce heeling and weather
helm.
• if necessary , reef the mainsail a little early.
• In very stron g winds and large seas , you should avoid sailing with the wind
dead astern :
• ideally, bring th e wind at least 30° away from a dead run.
• in severe condi tions, you may also need to remove the mainsa il and sail
under headsail only .
