2.2 Using Wind V ane mode
Note:
You can only select Wind Vane mode if the SmartPilot is receiving suitable SeaTalk
or NMEA wind directio n information.
What is Wind Vane mode?
When th e SmartPilot is in Wi nd Vane mo de it uses the fluxgate compass as the
primary heading reference. As changes in the true or apparent wind angle occur ,
it adju sts the locked heading to main tain the original win d angle.
Wind information
T o use Win d Vane mod e, the SmartPi lot must receive wind informati on from one
of the following sources:
SeaT alk wind instrument connected to the autopilot via SeaT alk
NMEA wind instrument
Raymari ne pushpit wind van e connected via a SeaT alk interface
T rue and apparent wind
SmartPi lots can maintain a co urse relative to either an apparent or tru e wind
angl e in Wind Vane mode
T he default setting is apparent wind. If required, you can change this to true wind
in User Calibra tion (see
page 31
).
WindT rim
In Win d Vane mod e the SmartPilot uses Wind T rim to eliminate the effects of
turbu lence and short term wind variations. This provides smooth and precise
performa nce with minimal power co nsumption. Y ou can adju st the wind
response (WindT rim) level in User Calibration (see
page 31
) to control how quickly
the SmartP ilot responds to chan ges in the wind direction . Higher wind trim
settings wil l result in a pilot that is more responsive to wind chan ges.
