Enjoying
Surround
Sound
This chapter describes how to set up
the receiver to enjoy surround sound.
You can enjoy multi channel surround
when playing back software encoded
with Dolby Digital or DTS.
You can take advantage of sur round sound simply by
selecting one of the r eceiver ’s pr e-pr ogrammed sound
modes. They bring the exciting and powerful sound of
movie theaters and concer t halls into your home. Y ou can
also customize the sound modes to obtain the sound you
desir e by changing the various sur round parameters.
The r eceiver contains a variety of dif fer ent sound modes.
The cinema sound modes ar e designed for use when
playing back movie softwar e (DVD, LD, etc.) encoded
with multi channel sur round sound or Dolby Pr o Logic.
In addition to decoding the sur round sound, some of
these modes also pr ovide sound ef fects commonly found
in movie theaters.
The virtual sound modes contain compelling applications
of the Sony Digital Cinema Sound digital signal
pr ocessing technology . They shift the sound away fr om
the actual speaker locations to simulate the pr esence of
several “virtual” speakers.
The music (etc.) sound modes ar e designed for use with
standar d audio sour ces and TV br oadcasts. They add
reverberation to the sour ce signal to make you feel as if
you wer e in a concer t hall or stadium (etc.). Use these
sound modes with two-channel sour ces like CD and
ster eo br oadcasts of spor ts pr ograms or musical concer ts.

The “Auto For mat Decoding” sound mode pr esents the
sound exactly as it was encoded, without adding any
reverberation (etc.).
To fully enjoy sur round sound, you must r egister the
number and location of your speakers. See “Multi-
Channel Sur round setup” star ting on page 15 to set the
speaker parameters befor e enjoying sur round sound.
