Surround sound
Sound that consists of thr ee elements:
direct sound, early r eflected sound
(early r eflections) and r everberative
sound (r everberation). The acoustics
of the sur rounding space af fect the
way these thr ee sound elements ar e
hear d. Sur round sound combines
these sound elements in such a way
that you actually can sense the size of
the venue, as well as its type.

Dolby Pro Logic Surround
As one method of decoding Dolby
Sur round, Dolby Pr o Logic Sur round
pr oduces four channels fr om two-
channel sound. Compar ed with the
for mer Dolby Sur round system,
Dolby Pr o Logic Sur round r epr oduces
left-to-right panning mor e naturally
and localizes sounds mor e pr ecisely .
To take full advantage of Dolby Pr o
Logic Sur round, you should have one
pair of sur round speakers and a
center speaker . The sur round speakers
output monaural sound.
Dolby Digital
This sound format for movie theaters
is mor e advanced than Dolby Pr o
Logic Sur round. In this for mat, the
sur round speakers output ster eo
sound with an expanded fr equency
range and a sub woofer channel for
deep bass is independently pr ovided.
This format is also called “5.1”
because the sub woofer channel is
counted as 0.1 channel (since it
functions only when a deep bass
ef fect is needed). All six channels in
this for mat ar e r ecor ded separately to
realize superior channel separation.
Fur ther mor e, since all the signals ar e
pr ocessed digitally , less signal
degradation occurs.
Digital Cinema Sound
This is the generic name of the
sur round sound pr oduced by digital
signal pr ocessing technology
developed by Sony . Unlike pr evious
sur round sound fields mainly
directed at the r epr oduction of music,
Digital Cinema Sound is designed
specifically for the enjoyment of
movies.
