Troubleshooting Guide

Overview

The TOPENS Exit Wand (Item NO.: TEW3) is a vehicle detection device designed to provide hands-free operation for most brands of gate openers. It automatically opens the gate when a vehicle moves past, enhancing convenience and security for residential and commercial properties.

Function Description:

The Exit Wand operates by sensing the presence of a moving vehicle. When a vehicle passes within its detection range, the wand triggers the gate opener to open the gate. This eliminates the need for remote controls or keypads for exiting vehicles, streamlining traffic flow and improving user experience. The device is particularly useful for properties where frequent vehicle exits are common, as it allows for smooth, uninterrupted departures.

Components:

The TEW3 Exit Wand system comprises three main elements:

  1. WAND SENSOR with 5-core cable: This is the primary detection unit, equipped with a 50-foot (15 meters) 5-core cable for connection to the control board.
  2. Range adjustment board: This board allows users to fine-tune the sensitivity of the wand, enabling adjustment of the detection range to suit specific environmental conditions and vehicle types.
  3. Adapter board: An adapter PCB is included for compatibility with certain models of TOPENS gate openers (specifically KD902, AT1202, RK990, RK1200, and CK1200). Users should consult their gate opener's manual to determine if this adapter board is necessary.

Installation Overview:

The Exit Wand should be installed after the gate opener has been set up and is functioning correctly.

  • Placement: The wand should be buried 2 inches (5.08 cm) deep from the ground and 8 inches (20.32 cm) from the driveway edge.
  • Distance from Gate: The wand should be positioned at least 25 feet (7.63 meters) from the gate's full open position. This minimum distance ensures that the gate has sufficient time to open fully before the vehicle reaches it.
  • Cable Routing: A PVC conduit is recommended for routing the cable from the buried wand to the control box, protecting it from damage. Approximately 5 feet (1.53 meters) of cable should remain above ground for connecting to the control board.
  • Testing: It is crucial to keep the wand and cable uncovered during initial testing to verify proper function before final burial.

Important Technical Specifications & Wiring:

The 5-core cable consists of the following wires:

  • RED (+): Power Input (12-24Vdc or 12-24Vac)
  • GREEN (-): Power Input (12-24Vdc or 12-24Vac)
  • BLACK: Relay output (Normal Open & Dry contact)
  • BLUE: Relay output (Normal Open & Dry contact) - To open only input port of gate opener
  • YELLOW: Connects to the Sensitivity board.

Wiring Connection Steps:

  1. Adapter Board (if needed): For specific TOPENS models (KD902, AT1202, RK990, RK1200, CK1200), the adapter board must be inserted into the control board's socket before wiring the wand.
  2. Wand to Control Board: The wand's 5-core cable is wired to the gate opener's control board and the range adjustment board. Specific wiring diagrams are provided for various TOPENS gate opener series (A series swing gate opener, AD/PW series swing gate opener, KD902&AT1202 swing gate opener, DK series sliding gate opener, RK990&RK1200&CK1200 sliding gate opener). These diagrams illustrate how the RED, GREEN, BLACK, and BLUE wires connect to the respective terminals on the control board, while the YELLOW wire connects to the sensitivity board.

Usage Features:

  • Hands-Free Operation: Provides automatic gate opening for exiting vehicles.
  • Adjustable Sensitivity: The range adjustment board allows users to modify the detection sensitivity. Turning the sensitivity board clockwise increases sensitivity, while turning it counter-clockwise decreases it. If sensitivity remains too high even at the minimum setting, the sensitivity board can be disconnected, leaving the YELLOW wire floating.
  • Detection Range: The typical sense range is 2-12 feet (0.61m-3.66m). This range can be influenced by vehicle size and speed. For instance, a small car traveling at 6.2 MPH (10 KM/H) might have a sense range of 3 feet (0.92m), while a large bus at 9.32 MPH (15 KM/H) could have a range of 12 feet (3.66m).

Maintenance Features:

  • Troubleshooting:
    • Ensure all wiring connections are correct before testing.
    • Verify there are no moving objects around the wand during testing.
  • Sensitivity Adjustment: Regular adjustment of the sensitivity board may be required to optimize performance based on environmental changes or specific user needs.

Important Notes:

  • The exit wand may be activated by strong magnetic fields, coins, tools, or other metal objects if the sensitivity is set too high. Users should decrease sensitivity by adjusting the sensitivity board counter-clockwise or by disconnecting it entirely if necessary.
  • It is recommended to set the Auto Close function of the gate opener when using the exit wand to ensure home security.
  • The device is designed to be compatible with most gate opener brands, but an adapter board is provided for specific TOPENS models to ensure seamless integration.
