BladeSafety
•Awornordamagedbladeorbedknifecanbreak,
andapiececouldbethrowntowardyouor
bystanders,resultinginseriouspersonalinjuryor
death.
•Inspectthecuttingunitsperiodicallyforexcessive
wearordamage.
•Usecarewhencheckingthecuttingunits.Wrap
thebladesorweargloves,andusecautionwhen
servicingthereelsandbedknives.Onlyreplaceor
sharpenthereelsandbedknives;neverstraighten
orweldthem.
•Onmachineswithmultiplecuttingunits,takecare
whenrotatingareel;itcancausethereelsinthe
othercuttingunitstorotate.
BacklappingtheCutting
Units
WARNING
Contactwiththereelsorothermovingparts
canresultinpersonalinjury.
•Keepyourngers,hands,andclothing
awayfromthereelsorothermovingparts.
•Neverattempttoturnthereelsbyhandor
footwhiletheengineisrunning.
Note:Whenbacklapping,thefrontunitsalloperate
together,andtherearunitsoperatetogether.
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,lowerthe
cuttingunits,engagetheparkingbrake,shut
offtheengine,andmovethePTOswitchtothe
OFFposition.
2.Unlockandraisethehoodtoexposethe
controls.
3.Makeinitialreel-to-bedknifeadjustments
appropriateforbacklappingonallcuttingunits
whicharetobebacklapped;refertothecutting
unitOperator'sManual.
4.Selecteitherfront,rear,orbothbacklaplevers
todeterminewhichunitstobacklap(Figure83).
5.Starttheengineandrunatlowidlespeed.

Changingtheenginespeedwhile
backlappingmaycausethereelstostall.
•Neverchangetheenginespeedwhile
backlapping.
•Backlaponlyatlowidleenginespeed.

Contactwiththecuttingunitscould
causepersonalinjury.
Becertainthatyouareclearofthe
cuttingunitsbeforeproceeding.
6.Withthemow-speedlimiterintheMOWposition,
movethePTOswitchtotheONposition.
7.Presstheliftswitchtostartthebacklapping
operationonthedesignatedreels.
8.Applylappingcompoundwithalong-handled
brush.
Note:Donotuseashort-handledbrush.
