Whendrillingandreaming,youpumpamixtureofbentonite
clay,water,andsometimesotheringredients,collectively
calleddrillinguidor“Mud”,throughthepipeandintothe
bore.Thisdrillinguid,or“Mud”,doesthefollowingfor

•Lubricatesthedrillhead
•Loosensthesoilintowhichthedrilliscutting
•Penetratesandbindsloosesoiltokeepthemfrom
collapsingontheborepipe.
Thespecicmixtureyouneedwillvarydependingonyour
soiltypeandtheoperationyouareperforming;refertoyour
mixingsystemOperator’sManualfordetails.
Conversely,forsomejobs(dependingonthesoiltypeand
distance),youcanpumpscreenedwaterfromanaturalwater
source,suchasalakeorriver,throughthedrillinlieuof
mixeddrillinguid.

SettingUptheMixingSystem
Setupyourmixingsystemnearthedirectionaldrilllocation,
preferablydownwindsofumesfromthemixingsystem
enginewillnotbotheryouwhiledrilling.Followthe
instructionsprovidedinthemixingsystemOperator’sManual
forsettingitupandusingit.
Completethefollowingtoconnecttheexithosefromthe
mixingsystemtothedrilling-uidpumponthemachine:
1.Raisethecam-lockleversonthepump-inletcapand
removethecap(Figure47).
