Factors Affecting Grooming
Thereare a number offactorsthat canaffectt he perfor-
manceof grooming.These factorsvary fordifferentgolf
courses and from green to green. It is important to in-
spect the turffrequently and varythe grooming practice
with turf needs.
It is important to remember that factors affecting quality
of cut also affect grooming performance.
IMPORTANT: Improper or overaggressive use of
the grooming reel, such as too deep or frequent
grooming, may cause unnecessary stress on the
turf leading tosevereturf damage. Use the groomer
carefully. READ AND UNDERSTAND THE GROOM-
ERINSTALLATI ONINSTRUCTIONSBEFOREOPER-
ATING OR TESTING GROOMER PERFORMANCE.
Variables That Affect the Use and Performance of Grooming Reels:
1. The growing season and weather conditions.
2. General turf conditions.
3. The frequency of grooming/cutting -- number of cut-
tings per week and how many passes per cutting.
4. The blade spacing on the grooming reel.
5. The height--of--cut.
6. Thegroomingdepth.
7. Thetypeofgrassonthegreen.
8. The amountof timethata grooming reelhas beenin
useonaparticularturfarea.
9. The amount of traffic on the turf.
10.The overall turf management program (e.g. irriga-
tion, fertilizing, weed control, coring, overseeding, dis-
ease control, sand dressing and pest control).
11.Stress periods for turf (e.g. high temperatures, high
humidity, unusually high traffic).
