Beforeeachuseordaily
Bothcuttingedgesandthesail,whichistheturned-up
portionoppositeofthecuttingedge,contributetoa
goodqualityofcut.Thesailliftsthegrassupstraight,
therebyproducinganevencut.However,thesail
graduallywearsdownduringoperation,degrading
thequalityofcut,althoughthecuttingedgesremain
sharp.Thecuttingedgeoftheblademustbesharp
sothatthegrassiscut,nottorn.Acuttingedgeis
dullwhenthetipsofthegrassappearbrownand
shredded.Sharpenthecuttingedgestocorrectthis
condition.
1.Positionthemachineonalevelsurface,raise
thecuttingunit,engagetheparkingbrake,put
thetractionpedalinNEUTRAL,ensurethatthe
PTOswitchisintheOFFposition,shutoffthe
engine,andremovethekey.
2.Examinethecuttingendsofthebladecarefully
(especiallywheretheatandcurvedpartsofthe
blademeet)asshowninFigure142.
Note:Sincesandandabrasivematerialcan
wearawaythemetalthatconnectstheat
andcurvedpartsoftheblade,checktheblade
beforeusingthemower.Ifyounoticewear,
replacetheblade(Figure142).

CorrectingaCutting-Unit
Mismatch
Whenthereismismatchbetweenthebladesona
singlecuttingunit,thegrassappearsstreakedwhenit
iscut.Youcancorrectthisproblembyensuringthat
thebladesarestraight.
1.Usinga1m(3ft)longcarpenter’slevel,nda
levelsurfaceontheshopoor.
2.Raisetheheight-of-cuttothehighestposition;
refertoAdjustingtheHeightofCut(page30).
3.Lowerthecuttingunitontoaatsurfaceand
removethecoversfromthetopofthecutting
unit.
4.Rotatethebladesuntiltheendsfaceforward
andbackward.
5.Measurefromtheoortothefronttipofthe
cuttingedge.Recordthiscondition.
6.Rotatethesamebladesothattheoppositeend
isforwardandmeasureitagain.
Note:Thedifferencebetweenthedimensions
mustnotexceed3mm(1/8inch).Ifthe
dimensionexceeds3mm(1/8inch),replacethe
blade,asitisbent.Measurealltheblades.
7.Ensurethatthedeckislevelfromsidetoside
andadjustasrequired.
8.Installthebeltcovers.
