BeforeOperationSafety
GeneralSafety
•Neverallowchildrenoruntrainedpeopletooperateor
servicethemachine.Localregulationsmayrestrictthe
ageoftheoperator.Theownerisresponsiblefortraining
alloperatorsandmechanics.
•Becomefamiliarwiththesafeoperationoftheequipment,
operatorcontrols,andsafetysigns.
•Knowhowtostopthemachineandenginequickly.
•Checkthatoperator-presencecontrols,safetyswitches,
andshieldsareattachedandfunctioningproperly.Donot
operatethemachineunlesstheyarefunctioningproperly.
•Beforemowing,alwaysinspectthemachinetoensurethat
theblades,bladebolts,andcuttingassembliesareingood
workingcondition.Replacewornordamagedbladesand
boltsinsetstopreservebalance.
•Inspecttheareawhereyouwillusethemachineand
removeallobjectsthatthemachinecouldthrow .
FuelSafety
•Useextremecareinhandlingfuel.Itisammableandits
vaporsareexplosive.
•Extinguishallcigarettes,cigars,pipes,andothersources
ofignition.
•Useonlyanapprovedfuelcontainer.
•Neverremovethefuelcaporllthefueltankwhilethe
engineisrunningorhot.
•Neverrefuelthemachineinanenclosedspace.
•Neverstorethemachineorfuelcontainerwherethereis
anopename,spark,orpilotlight,suchasonawater
heaterorotherappliance.
•Ifyouspillfuel,donotattempttostarttheengine;avoid
creatinganysourceofignitionuntilthefuelvaporshave
dissipated.
CheckingtheEngine-OilLevel
ServiceInterval:Beforeeachuseordaily
Theengineisshippedwithoilinthecrankcase;however,the
oillevelmustbecheckedbeforeandaftertheengineisrst
started.
Crankcasecapacityisapproximately3.8L(4USqt)with
thelter.
Usehigh-qualityengineoilthatmeetsthefollowing
specications:
•APIClassicationLevelRequired:CH-4,CI-4orhigher.
•Preferredoil:SAE15W-40(above0ºF(-17ºC))
•Alternateoil:SAE10W-30or5W-30(alltemperatures)
Note:ToroPremiumEngineOilisavailablefromyour
distributorineither15W-40or10W-30viscosity.Refertothe
PartsCatalogforpartnumbers.
Note:Thebesttimetochecktheengineoiliswhenthe
engineiscoolbeforeithasbeenstartedfortheday.Ifithas
alreadybeenrun,allowtheoiltodrainbackdowntothe
sumpforatleast10minutesbeforechecking.Iftheoillevelis
atorbelowtheAddmarkonthedipstick,addoiltobringthe
oilleveltotheFullmark.Donotoverlltheengine.Ifthe
oillevelisbetweentheFullandAddmarks,nooiladdition
isrequired.
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,lowerthecutting
units,engagetheparkingbrake,shutofftheengine,
andremovethekey.
2.Removethedipstick(Figure25)andwipeitwitha
cleanrag.

3.Pushthedipstickdownintothedipsticktubeandmake
surethatitisseatedfully.Pullthedipstickoutand
checktheoillevel.
4.Iftheoillevelislow ,removetheoil-llcap(Figure26)
andgraduallyaddsmallquantitiesofoil,checkingthe
levelfrequently,untilthelevelreachestheFullmark
onthedipstick.
