It is essential that
the timber is square
all round. Study the
drawings and select
the appropriate type
of tenon.
Mark up the centre
line on the end of
the first piece of
timber using a
marking gauge.
Mark the tenon
end marks using
a set square.
Generally aim for
the end tenon
marks to be equal
to the width of the
tenon (X).
This may not
always be possible
for side angled
tenons as the
length of the tenon
and the angle
required may cause
restrictions.
Mark out the length
of the tenon.
Generally keep the
tenon as long as
possible for
increased gluing
surface. For
through tenons,
make the tenon
length equal to the
timber width plus
1
8
” for trimming
afterwards
Straight tenon
30º Side angled tenon
15º Front angled tenon
When mounting
timber in the jig
keep the face
side towards
the jig.
