CHECKING SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF ELECTROLYTE
Conversion table
Specic gravity at 20°C
Reading of hydrometer
Temperature °C
Use a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of the
electrolyte.
If there is any variation among individual cell specic gravities, an
equalizing charge is required.
The normal specific gravity of electrolyte is 1.260 when the
temperature is 20°C. See the conversion table when the
temperature is other than 20°C.
For example, if the hydrometer reads 1.250 when the temperature
is 5°C, the specific gravity corresponding to the temperature of
20°C is 1.240. This value is lower than the specied value by 0.020.
In such a case, it is necessary to increase the specic gravity of
the electrolyte accordingly.
If the specic gravity of the electrolyte is very low, check the pole
plates and generator.
