Safety Rules and Operating Instructions
Operator Manual
WARNING
All personnel shall carefully read, understand and follow all safety rules,
operating instructions, and the Scaffold Industry Association’s MANUAL
OF RESPONSIBILITIES
of ANSI A92.6-1999
before operating or
performing maintenance on any UpRight Aerial Work Platform.
Safety Rules
NEVER
operate the machine without first surveying the work area for surface hazards such as holes,
drop-offs, bumps and debris.
NEVER
operate the machine if all guardrails are not properly in place and secured with all fasteners prop-
erly torqued.
SECURE
chain or gate across entrance after mounting platform.
NEVER
use ladders or scaffolding on the platform.
NEVER
attach overhanging loads or increase platform size.
LOOK up
, down and around for overhead obstructions and electrical conductors.
DISTRIBUTE
all loads evenly on the platform. See the back cover for maximum platform load.
NEVER
use damaged equipment. (Contact UpRight for instructions. See toll-free phone number on back
cover.)
NEVER
change operating or safety systems.
INSPECT
the machine thoroughly for cracked welds, loose hardware, hydraulic leaks, damaged control
cable, loose wire connections and wheel bolts.
NEVER
climb down elevating assembly with the platform elevated.
NEVER
perform service on machine while platform is elevated without blocking elevating assembly.
NEVER
recharge batteries near sparks or open flame; batteries that are being charged emit highly explo-
sive hydrogen gas.
AFTER USE
secure the work platform against unauthorized use by turning key switch off and removing
key.
NEVER
replace any component or part with anything other than original UpRight replacement parts with-
out the manufacturer’s consent.
NEVER operate the machine within
ten feet of power lines.
THIS MACHINE IS NOT INSULATED
NEVER elevate the platform or drive
the machine while elevated unless
the machine is on firm level surface.
NEVER sit, stand or climb on
guardrail or midrail.

Usage Features:

  • Pre-Operation and Safety Inspection: Before each use, a thorough inspection is required, including checking for damage, oil leaks, battery fluid levels, guardrail integrity, and proper functioning of controls. This includes pulling the Chassis and Platform EMERGENCY STOP Switches to the ON position and testing the lift/lower and drive functions.
  • Platform Controls: The platform is operated using a Control Handle with an Interlock Switch, a Lift/Drive Switch, and a Steering Switch.
  • Emergency Lowering: In case of power failure, an Emergency Lowering Knob (or valve handle) is provided to manually lower the platform. The location of this knob varies by model (X20N, X20W, X26N vs. X31N).
  • Platform Extension: The platform features a slide-out deck extension that must be properly secured with a pin before operation.
  • Travel with Platform Lowered/Elevated: The machine can be driven with the platform lowered or elevated. When elevated, the machine travels at a reduced speed. Operators must ensure the route is clear of obstacles and the surface is firm and level.
  • Steering: Steering is not self-centering, requiring the operator to manually return the wheels to a straight-ahead position.
  • Tilt Alarm: If the machine is not level, a tilt alarm will sound, preventing the platform from lifting or driving. The platform must be lowered and moved to a firm, level surface.
  • Guardrail Folding (X26N & X31N): Specific procedures are provided for lowering/folding guardrails to allow the machine to pass through standard double doorways. Guardrails must be returned to their proper, secured position before operation.
  • Parking Brake Release: Instructions are given for releasing the parking brakes, which is necessary for moving the machine if it cannot operate under its own power or for winching onto a trailer. The X31N has two brake adjustment nuts, while other models have one.
  • Transporting: The manual details how to transport the work platform by crane (using lift lugs) or by forklift (using forklift pockets or under chassis modules). It also provides instructions for securing the machine to a transport vehicle using tie-downs.
  • Key Switch: A key switch is used to secure the work platform against unauthorized use by turning it off and removing the key after use.

Maintenance Features:

  • Preventative Maintenance Checklist: A comprehensive checklist is provided for periodic visual and operational checks, along with minor adjustments. This checklist covers various components and systems, including:
    • Batteries: Check electrolyte level, specific gravity, exterior cleanliness, cable condition, and terminal cleanliness.
    • Hydraulic Oil: Check oil level, change filter, drain and replace oil, check for leaks, hose connections, and exterior wear.
    • Emergency Hydraulic System: Operate and check the serviceability of the emergency lowering valve.
    • Chassis Controls & Platform Controls: Check switch operation.
    • Control Cable: Check exterior for pinching, binding, or wear.
    • Platform Deck and Rails: Check fasteners for proper torque, welds for cracks, condition of deck, and for damage.
    • Tires: Check for damage and lug nuts (torque to 90 ft. lbs.).
    • Hydraulic Pump: Wipe clean, check for leaks at mating surfaces and hose fittings, and check mounting bolts for proper torque.
    • Drive Motors: Check for operation and hardware/fittings for proper torque.
    • Steering System: Grease pivot pins, check steering cylinder for leaks, and inspect for structural cracks.
    • Elevating Assembly: Check pivot points for wear, mounting pin pivot bolts for proper torque, elevating arms for bending, and hoses for pinch or rubbing points.
    • Chassis: Check component mounting for proper torque and welds for cracks.
    • Tilt Sensor: Check for operation.
    • Lift Cylinder: Check cylinder rod for wear, mounting pin pivot bolts for proper torque, seals for leaks, pivot points for wear, and fittings for proper torque.
    • Entire Unit: Check for collision damage, fasteners for proper torque, corrosion (remove and repaint), and lubrication.
    • Labels: Check for peeling, missing, or unreadable labels and replace as needed.
  • Battery Maintenance: Daily checks of battery fluid level are crucial, especially in warm, dry climates. Distilled water should be added if the electrolyte level is low. Regular inspection of batteries and cables for cracks, leakage, corrosion, and wear is required.
  • Battery Charging: Batteries should be charged at the end of each work shift or sooner if discharged. Charging must occur in a well-ventilated area, away from sparks or flames. The charger circuit must use a GFI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupt) outlet, and the machine should not be operated while plugged in.
  • Blocking Elevating Assembly: A critical safety procedure for maintenance, requiring the elevating assembly to be blocked whenever service is performed with the platform elevated. Detailed steps are provided for both installation and removal of the scissor brace for blocking.
  • Labeling: The manual emphasizes the importance of proper label installation and condition, stating that all labels must be present, in good condition, and understood before operating the work platform.
