Regular Roof: A standard roof where the hips and/or valleys create a 45˚ degree angle and have the
same pitch/slope on both sides.
Irregular Roof: A non-standard roof where the hips and/or valleys rafters bisect two different pitches/
slopes, or have “skewed wings” or irregular Jacks. The pitch of the two sides are different because of a
difference in wall heights.
Rake Wall: A gable end wall that extends up to a sloped roof.
Incremental Adjustment: The difference in rafter length from one rafter to the next.
Cut Types:
• Plumb: The vertical cut of a rafter that is allows it to connect with the ridge rafter.
• Level: The horizontal line after the rafter is set in place. It is cut from the edge of the board and
allows the rafter to seat at on the wall plate.
• Cheek: Also referred to as a bevel or side cut, Used on the top of valley or hip rafters where they
meet a ridge board. Jack rafters typically have one cheek cut. If there is only one pitch (no irregular
pitch), the angle will be 45˚, totaling 90˚ on both sides. If there are two pitches, each side will have
a different Cheek cut for the Jack rafter and angles will total 90˚.
