6-1 IGNITION SYSTEM
6-2 LIGHTING SYSTEM
Current for the ign itio n sys tem is provided by the magneto
as se mbly. The magneto assembly consists of the mag-
netized r otating flywheel and the primary source coils
(attached
to the magneto backi ng p la te). The action of the
r
otating flywheel generates a l ow voltage primary c urrent in
the
primary source coils. This current is timed, by the
opening and closing
of the ign itio n points, to pass to the
secondary (high voltage) coils at
th e correct moment. The
secondary coi
Is co nvert the pr imary voltage into high
voltage curr
ent and deliver it through the high tension leads
to the spark plugs .
Lighting
current is generated in a similar manner by the
lighting coil located
on the point plate. The lighting system
is of a balanced output type design for the head I ight and
taillight. Overloading of the lighting system by adding on
I ighting equipment is not recommended. Because the
ligh
ti ng sys tem is of a balanced output type, burning out of
e ith er the headlight or taillight can result in a heavy surge
of electricity being for c ed to the remaining light bulb. The
rem
ai ning bulb can also burn out because of this surge.
