Pingoriginatesfromsonarlocationoperation.Pingisusedtotestwhetheranother
hostisreachable.TheprogramsendsanICMPEchoRequesttothehostandwaits
foranICMPEchoReply.
Ifahostcannotbepingedsuccessfully,thehostcannotbeloggedinthrough
TelecommunicationNetworkProtocol(TELNET)orFTP .Onthecontrary,ifahost
cannotbeloggedinthroughTELNET,thepingprogramcanbeusedtondoutthe
problem.Thepingprogramalsocanbeusedtotestthetimeofaround-triptothe
host,whichindicateshowfarawaythehostis.
lCharacteristicsofPing
ThepingcommandsendsanICMPEchoRequest.Ifthedestinationreceivesthe
ICMPEchoRequest,itwillsendanICMPEchoReplytothesourceaddressofthe
EchoRequest.Therefore,thepingcommandcanbeusedtodiagnosenetwork
connectivityfaults.
