9.1RMONOverview
AsanimportantenhancedfunctionofSNMP ,RemoteNetworkMonitoring(RMON)can
monitoroverallsubnettrafcinformationontheEthernetandtokenringnetwork.
TheRMONmoduleprovidesthefollowingfunctions:
lConguredwiththestatisticsfunction,itmonitorsthebasictrafcofthespecied
subnet.
ThetrafcinformationreferstotrafcdataregularlyobtainedbyRMON.
lConguredwiththehistoryfunction,itrecordstrafcinformationonthespecied
subnetduringthespeciedinterval.
Ashortsamplingintervalcanbeconguredtoviewasuddentrafcchangeona
subnet.Alongintervalcanbeconguredtoviewlong-termtrafcstatusofasubnet.
lConguredwiththeeventfunction,ithandlesalarmmessagesbyrecordingthem
or/andsendingTrapmessages,sothatnetworkadministratorscanknowsystem
conditionsintime.
lConguredwiththealarmfunctionandthecorrespondingeventfunction,itshowsthe
changesofspeciedvariablessuchassysUPTime.0,whichisaMIBvariable.
Ifanalarmitemiscongured,notlessthan500CRCerrors(thatis,thethresholdis
500)thatappearin5mintriggeranalarm.Inthiscase,ifthecorrespondingeventis
conguredassendingaTrapmessage,aTrapmessageissenttotheTrapserver.
TosendTrapmessagessuccessfully,youalsoneedtocorrectlysettheIPaddress
oftheTrapserverandacommunitystringforSNMPandtoenabletheSNMPTrap
sendingfunction.
