9.1RMONOverview
AsanimportantenhancedfunctionofSNMP ,RemoteNetworkMonitoring(RMON)can
monitoroverallsubnettrafīæcinformationontheEthernetandtokenringnetwork.
TheRMONmoduleprovidesthefollowingfunctions:
lConīæguredwiththestatisticsfunction,itmonitorsthebasictrafīæcofthespeciīæed
subnet.
ThetrafīæcinformationreferstotrafīæcdataregularlyobtainedbyRMON.
lConīæguredwiththehistoryfunction,itrecordstrafīæcinformationonthespeciīæed
subnetduringthespeciīæedinterval.
Ashortsamplingintervalcanbeconīæguredtoviewasuddentrafīæcchangeona
subnet.Alongintervalcanbeconīæguredtoviewlong-termtrafīæcstatusofasubnet.
lConīæguredwiththeeventfunction,ithandlesalarmmessagesbyrecordingthem
or/andsendingTrapmessages,sothatnetworkadministratorscanknowsystem
conditionsintime.
lConīæguredwiththealarmfunctionandthecorrespondingeventfunction,itshowsthe
changesofspeciīæedvariablessuchassysUPTime.0,whichisaMIBvariable.
Ifanalarmitemisconīægured,notlessthan500CRCerrors(thatis,thethresholdis
500)thatappearin5mintriggeranalarm.Inthiscase,ifthecorrespondingeventis
conīæguredassendingaTrapmessage,aTrapmessageissenttotheTrapserver.
TosendTrapmessagessuccessfully,youalsoneedtocorrectlysettheIPaddress
oftheTrapserverandacommunitystringforSNMPandtoenabletheSNMPTrap
sendingfunction.
